Who we are
The Ottawa Pops Orchestra is a semi-professional community orchestra dedicated to performing accessible and relevant music. The “Pops” in our name is short for “popular,” since a lot of the music that we play is sourced from current popular culture. We are passionate storytellers, and the orchestral experience that we strive to create is one full of once-upon-a-times, fairy-tale soundscapes, and galaxies far, far away. Even so, we always keep one foot in the world of classical music, celebrating its traditions, its rich history, and especially its romance.
Why we care
We’re passionate about redefining the modern orchestral experience, which we do through our innovative performances. We are made up of people just like you, and we love to dress up and share our love for the music that we play. Our mission: to foster the next generation of musicians, redefine the orchestral experience, and create a sense of community in the Ottawa-Gatineau Region.
Our beginnings
We have humble roots as a school club at the University of Ottawa, founded by Mathieu Roy in 2012 with only a handful of eager musicians. We have since become a non-profit organization and are proud to play with over 60 musicians.
Our Growth
Our first season in 2017–2018 was a huge success, as we performed for over 3,000 people over the course of three series of concerts. In the 2018–2019 season, our performances were hosted exclusively at Meridian Theatres at Centrepointe as we developed educational opportunities in the Ottawa area and brought bigger and better shows to life than ever before.
