Although best known for his work with Studio Ghibli, Joe Hisaishi has built an extraordinary career as a composer, pianist, and conductor. His catalogue includes symphonies, concertos, chamber music, and scores for acclaimed filmmakers beyond animation, revealing a musical voice that extends far beyond the worlds of Miyazaki.
One of Cinema's Greatest Partnerships
When Joe Hisaishi first met Hayao Miyazaki in the early 1980s, neither could have predicted the impact their collaboration would have on cinema. Beginning with Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind in 1984, their partnership has spanned more than four decades and produced some of the most beloved animated films ever created, becoming one of the defining composer-director collaborations in film history.
Music Before the Movie
Unlike many film scores, Joe Hisaishi's music often begins long before the animation is complete. Working from Hayao Miyazaki's storyboards and conversations about the emotional world of each film, Hisaishi develops musical ideas through "image albums" before a single frame is finished. Many of those early sketches ultimately become the unforgettable themes audiences know and love.
The Name Behind the Music
Joe Hisaishi was born Mamoru Fujisawa, adopting his professional name as a tribute to American producer and composer Quincy Jones. The Japanese pronunciation of "Quincy Jones" inspired the stage name "Joe Hisaishi," which has since become synonymous with some of the most celebrated film music ever written.
